In our culture, coffee is a cornerstone of connection. We fell in love not just with the craft of coffee but the atmosphere it fosters and the deeper sacred space it holds and creates between us. Coffee is a fleeting experience to be enjoyed in the fullest just like our time together here.
Morii exists with the intention to foster and create those spaces and to encourage us all to be tenacious stewards of the present moment. The deeper intentions of what coffee brings drives our creativity, quality, and philosophy. We hope to share this with you with every cup of our product and help create sacred spaces between yourself and the others dear to you in all times spaces and places.
the meaning of morii
Morii means the desire to capture a fleeting moment that cannot be captured. Its etymology is derived from the words memento mori and tori:
a memento mori is a gentle reminder of the inevitability and uncertainty of death, designed to remind the observer to be mindful and present.
a torii is a traditional japanese gateway marking the transition into a sacred space.
These concepts are held in high regard to us and we have found coffee as a special medium to physically manifest and share these concepts and philosophy.
conscious of consequence
The world is smaller than ever before and we believe the part we play is important. Coffee is the second highest traded commodity in the world because of this, and the nature in which coffee is grown, accessibility and affordability have often come at the detriment and expense of the people that grow and provide it. Because of this we purchase and provide strictly organic or fair trade organic coffees. We are part of the community working towards a better, more sustainable and connected future (and look forward to having you play a part as well).
the morii difference
The coffee industry has been rapidly evolving and expanding. Coffee roasting and serving has distinct and recognizable trends. Terminology has developed for these trends. The current wave of the industry that we are in is widely accepted as the “3rd wave”. 3rd wave coffee is distinct and recognizable.
It emphasizes a tendency towards light roasted coffees in an effort to present unadulterated origin flavors showcasing the complexity and diversity of the product. This has been overarchingly beneficial pushing the general care and quality of coffee to a new status quo. However, many customers and clients find the 3rd wave style of coffee roasting unforgiving and overplayed compared to it’s roasty relatives of past waves. We take the care and quality control of third wave and break the mold.
We roast with the core philosophies of 3rd wave coffee without its sometimes detrimental stylistic restrictions. Our roast philosophy is to create an easily consumable product that is enjoyable for all palates that showcases the exciting complexity of specialty coffee without the overbearing qualities commonly found today. This creates coffees that are exciting, enjoyable, inoffensive, accessible and forgiving.
